Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the mother¡¯s attitude on sexuality of mentally retarded children for development of sexual intervention program for mentally retarded adolescents and their parents.
The research subjects were 116 mothers of mentally retarded children who attended in special schools in G city and C province and the members of the Parents Association of Handicapped Children in Korea. The instrument employed for the study was the Social/Sexual Awareness Survey which was developed by Ruble (1992). SAS PC+ pro-gram was used for statistical analysis and the data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, x2-test, and Fishers Exact test.
The results were as follows.
1. Mothers stated that mentally retarded children knew the meaning of sexual organ (45.7 %), but only 21.6% stated that `mentally retarded children knew its function.
2. Mothers were concerned about the most mentally retarded children¢¥s behavior being misunderstood as sexual, although it was not (45.7%). Mothers responded no concerns on their mentally retarded children¢¥s possible infection with venereal diseases or AIDS (56.6%), or on mentally retarded children¢¥s unusual interest on the same sex (73.2%).
3. The information which mothers wanted to get were need for birth control (72.4%), best type of birth control (66.4%), and possibility of pregnancy (62.9%).
In conclusion, the mothers of mentally retarded children have inaccurate knowledge on
sex related with their mentally retarded children with mental retardation. Continuous sex education and counseling is necessary to change attitude on sexuality of mothers with men-tally retarded children.
